Ingredients

  1. Drain tofu and use a tofu press to press all of the water out. If you're using vegan beef, take 1/4 lb and roll into a "steak" patty shape.

  2. Prepare the vegan steak by cutting tofu or any steak substitute into ½ inch steaks. Season heavily with salt, pepper, steak seasoning, onion powder, thyme, worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, and garlic powder. Set aside for 20 minutes.

  3. If you are using vegan beef, place the patty in the freezer to help it keep its shape.

  4. In a medium sized bowl combine all of the ingredients under Wet Ingredients adding the flour into the bowl first following the other ingredients. Set aside.

  5. In a different medium sized bowl whisk together all of the dry ingredients under Seasoned Flour Ingredients. Set aside.

  6. Heat up a frying pan with frying oil about 1-2 inches deep.

  7. While the oil is heating up, start the battering process. One hand will be your dry hand and one hand will be your wet hand. With your wet hand place the steak in the batter until coated thoroughly.

  8. With your dry hand take the steak and coat with seasoned flour.

  9. Working with one or two at a time, place coated steak in hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan.

  10. Fry on each side for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer the steaks to a paper towel-lined plate or baking sheet. Once all of the steaks are done frying, prepare the gravy.

  11. Pour the hot oil into a heatproof bowl and let cool before discarding.

  12. In the same pan, melt butter over medium heat and stir in flour to create a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the flour is cooked out.

  13. Slowly whisk in plant milk until the mixture starts to thicken. Start with one cup of plant milk and slowly add more if needed.

  14. Stir in the vegetable bouillon cube and seasonings until the gravy is smooth and free of clumps. Taste the gravy as you go and adjust seasonings to your liking.

  15. Plate your country fried steak and top it with gravy.

  16. Enjoy!
